Ann as a Coach

What can you expect from Ann as a coach? – Ann is passionate about building the confidence, self-belief, suppleness and strength of both the horse and the rider.

Ann will listen to you and be there for you

You as the rider know your horse better than anyone else and I will respect that. This creates lessons that are a three-way conversation between the rider, the horse and the coach, each one given the opportunity to express their opinion.

Ann teaching a student in Australia
  • I will provide an environment which is conducive to your learning.  Not just a safe arena, but consideration for the temperament of your horse, your state of mind and your style of learning.
  • I will be listening to your words and your body language and that of your horse.
  • I will help you and your horse to have clearer communication and understanding of each other so that you can bring out the best in each other.
  • I will help you find the tools which naturally talented riders use automatically.  I will work on your mental attitude as well as your riding and the bio-mechanics of both you and your horse.
  • You will develop confidence and self belief, because I will believe in you.
  • I can help you become the person and rider you want to be and together we will identify your goals and achieve them.

Ann notices the smallest details

By noticing and addressing the smallest of details I will dig deeper until she gets the rider to feel what she can see, and understand what’s going on. I notice how the rider is processing the information and uses that to fast forward the learning of both horse and rider.

By addressing the causes rather than the symptoms, I can bring the things that the rider and horse may be struggling to do, out of the shadows and into the conscious present.

What happens in you lessons?

Your first lesson with me – I like to initiate our coaching sessions with first doing an Assessment lesson which will be 1.5 hours, so that we have time to gather information about each other.

We will be assessing to determine where you are up to and what our priorities will be.
This session will be partly videoed to show the starting point and finishing point of your lesson.

After the lesson has finished (unmounted) we will review the video footage together and discuss the differences we can each see. You may be given exercises to strengthen or stretch parts of your body, depending on your needs.

Future lessons – Will be 45 mins to 1 hour long, depending on the progress/ability of the horse/rider on that day. There is no video recording or feedback, just a one on one session. You may however be given exercises to strengthen or stretch parts of your body, depending on your needs.

You are also welcome to request an ongoing assessment lesson at any time. This will be conducted as a normal lesson, but will be partly videoed to show the difference in yours and the horses way of going as the lessons progress and will be 1.5 hours duration.

After the lesson has finished (unmounted) we will review the video footage together and discuss the differences we can each see. This time is also used to discuss other issues, such as lack of confidence or self-belief, nervousness or fear, and practice strategies for dealing with them. You may also be given exercises to strengthen or stretch parts of your body, depending on your needs.

Is the lesson all about my position or the horse ?

In most of the early lessons, we will be concentrating on the rider, not the horse.  Sometimes I have to address the horse first if the horse is creating an issue in the rider’s position, or is showing a behavior that is dangerous.

We will work on placing you in balance, giving you core stability and tone in the parts of your body that are weak.

Every rider and horse combination is unique and have their own special requirements.

Adjusting the Feel of the rider.

My coaching and instructions are personalised specifically for each rider’s learning style and body type.

Some bio-mechanic and RWYM techniques require the instructor to physically alter the rider’s position by touch.  If you are not comfortable with this, you need to let me know.
